Summertime, Summertime, Sum Sum Summertime

I know that technically summer doesn't start until the end of June, but for me, it started this week!  I am officially done with work and home in Ohio enjoying my time off with the family...and almost exactly two weeks from my trip!!

Things that are great about weight loss in the summertime:
- lots of fresh fruits and veggies!!
- warmer, sunshiney weather means spending more time outside
- the heat makes me not want to eat
- pool/beach time!!
- grilled food

Things that are not great about weight loss in the summertime:
- after going to the meeting here a second time, I'm still not a big fan, but it'll do while I'm here - the people are at least reasonably friendly
- the heat makes it difficult to get in workouts.  My apartment is air conditioned, my office is air conditioned, the gyms are air conditioned...I come home to a house that's over 100 years old and three stories tall...and not air conditioned.  But, the good news is that while it has been way too hot to get in my typical workouts, there are ways to get in exercise, despite the heat.

1. There's one bathroom in the house - upstairs.  I need to start counting how many times a day I walk up and down the stairs.
2. Playing with the niece and nephews!  One of my favorites....
3. Pool/beach time!!  The resistance the water provides gives a great low-impact, yet still fun exercise!  And even just walking in sand is more difficult than walking on asphalt.
4. Evening walks - spending time with the family after it starts cooling down and enjoying a nice leisurely walk around the neighborhood.

Now, aside from the stairs, I haven't done any of these, but then again I've only been home for about 3 days.  It's starting to cool off, so hopefully I'll be able to get some more activity in soon - and we're supposed to try water zumba this week.  I'm excited to try it!

Reminder:  my meetings are now on Tuesdays, so no more Monday night posts until the end of July.

Initial weight: 257.2
Week 20: -3.0
Total weight loss: -37.2 lbs
Current weight: 220.0

I officially weigh less than I did the very first time I started Weight Watchers - and I'm about 1 pound away from losing the same amount that I did that time.  Exciting!!

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

This past week hasn't been much different than the last week - still little food open on campus, still avoiding fast food, which is getting increasingly difficult.  I say that because I'm refusing to go to the store - I need to clean out my refridgerator this week and don't really want to add more food to it.  This coming weekend I will be travelling back to Ohio to visit the family while I'm on summer vacay, so I don't want to leave a bunch of stuff.  But, that also means that I have little to eat.  Not a major issue, as there are plenty of places around here to get reasonably healthy food, and I have a few Smart Ones stocked up to tide me over.  So, since there wasn't any major drama, I thought I'd take this time to talk about changes.

When I first started this journey, I noted that it was not a New Years Resolution, but a change in my lifestyle.  After I weighed in this week, my leader asked me if I had noticed any changes, and the smart aleck in me wanted to say, "I've lost over 30 pounds...of course I've noticed changes", but I simply answered "yes" and proceeded to note a few for her.  Thinking about changes, I began to notice more and more - some big, some little.

- When I'm looking for someone else to cook my dinner, I'm thinking about actual restaraunts, not fast food chains.

- I spend significantly less money eating out.

- I snack on fruits and veggies rather than chips and pretzels.

- I have more energy than I've had in a long time.  I've never really been a morning person...unless there's something super important going on in the morning (like leaving for vacay, taking someone somewhere, or opening Christmas presents), it usually takes me a few times to hit the snooze before I get up.  Well, I still hit the snooze button (hey, I like sleep), but throughout the day I am way less tired than I used to be.  I don't feel like napping after lunch most days, I don't drink coffee (not like I did much before, but I would partake in the occasional iced beverage before), and I don't spend my whole evening on the couch because I'm too tired to do anything else.

- I go for two hour walks with friends on the weekend instead of watching tv.

- Yoga is getting easier each time I do it.  This week I did tree position without falling for the first time!  (That's the one where you stand on one leg with the other foot on your thigh with your hands over your head)  Though, I still kind of feel like Warrior Pose is the devil (lunging with your arms over your head)...

- Exercise gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy, and happy people just don't kill their husbands....they just don't!  Okay, I stole that from Legally Blonde, but it's true.  I am, in general, a happier person.  I contribute it partially to feeling better about myself period, and partially to the new enorphins.  I'm not really much of a grumpy person anyway, but I don't let things stress me out as much.

- I sleep better.  I fall asleep faster - I don't get up during the night as often (unless I wait until late to work out then, I have to pee a lot because of all the water I drank).

- I don't work out EVERY day - and on the days that I don't, it takes me longer to get to sleep.  I lay in bed feeling like I forgot something and have energy to burn.

- I am rediscovering all kinds of clothes that I had but couldn't wear.  (I found even more since last week)  On a slightly sad note, though, some clothes that I really like are getting way too big now.  I know that it's really a good thing....but I liked them.

- This was the first year I've gotten out my summer clothes and not worried that they wouldn't fit because they were too small...I actually worried that they wouldn't fit because they were too big.  There were a few that were a little big, none that were too small, but plenty that were just right.  (And now I sound like Goldilocks)

- I don't have to buy a bathing suit this year...I have several now.

- My boobs are bigger than my stomach again.

- Some days I actually kind of like looking at myself in the mirror.

Change is hard...and scary.  But change makes you stronger...and sometimes thinner.

Randomness and Discoveries

I've been struggling all day trying to decide about what to write.  It's been a pretty uneventful week.  It was the first whole week without any students, and I think I've been managing the change with no dining hall pretty well.  For lunch I've been going to the cafe at the Business Building, salads and turkey sandwiches have become my best friends.  Dinners have been on my own - I had a couple Weight Watcher frozen dinners, had Subway one night, and made a delicious parmesan crusted Tilapia two nights in a row (it was that good - thanks, Sis, for the idea of adding the parmesan!).  I used frozen Tilapia filets (unthawed them, of course), put a small amount of butter on each one, sprinkled them with some salt, pepper, and grated parmesan cheese.  Stuck them in the oven at 350 degrees for 20-30mins and voila!

The other fairly exciting food discovery I had this week was Barilla Plus pasta.  I will be the first to admit that I am a major pasta snob.  Like any good Italian, I love me some pasta, but I am selective.  I will eat Olive Garden (though I usually go for something outside of ordinary pasta, like ravioli, manicotti, cavatelli, or something with an alfredo sauce), or a couple select local places, but I generally do not order pasta out.  Similarly, when it comes to shopping for pasta to make at home, the brand matters.  In general I have nothing against generic brands, but there is no generic for my pasta...it's always Barilla.  A few weeks ago in my WW meeting, someone mentioned really liking the Barilla Plus.  It's a multi-grain pasta, but said that unlike the "whole wheat" pasta, you really can't taste a difference.  Well, I was at the store after that meeting and saw some so I thought I'd try it.  I was a bit nervous.  It sat on my shelf untouched for several weeks.  But, this week I was trying to find something to go with my Tilapia and figured I'd finally give it a try.  IT IS SO TASTY!!  Comparing the boxes side by side, there is a clear color difference between the pastas, but when cooked and sitting on your plate it's really not evident that it's not regular white pasta.  Now, it's worth the same amount of points, but the multi-grain is better for you than the white flour.  I will definitely be having it again!

I had another decent workout week - again, nothing bad but nothing fantastic.  Saturday was gorgeous around here so it was great to get outside a little bit.  I took my bicycle to the gas station to fill up the tires!  I didn't actually get out on the bike this weekend, but getting the bike in the car was a workout in itself!  As much as I'm looking forward to riding it, the bike may stay in the car until I get home for the summer next week.  We'll see how nice it gets this weekend if I'm tempted to get it out...

Since it was so nice this past week, I got out my summer clothes in preparation for the warm weather.  I tried on all my shorts and capris to see how they fit, and there were actually a couple that were too big, and even more exciting was that NONE of them were too small!!  I even pulled out some that I didn't even wear last year cause they were too tight, and I dug a few pairs of jeans out of the bottom of my pants drawer that I hadn't worn in several years, and they all fit too!!  The jeans have been great for work this week - I can dress down more when I don't have meetings since I don't have random students dropping in on me, so it's been awesome to have some new (less baggy) jeans to wear.  While they fit much better than the jeans I now HAVE to wear belts with, they themselves are a little loose.  Perhaps my plan to wait to buy new pants until the fall is an even better idea than I originally thought!  Rediscovering all these clothes I had but couldn't wear has been better than buying all new clothes....cause this way I don't have to spend any money!!

Triple Crown

This weekend had The Kentucky Derby, which is the first of three races known as the Triple Crown.  Well, I don't really know much about horse racing, but I had my own Triple Crown this week.

1. Closing - We closed our buildings for the summer this weekend.  The event in itself is not so much a challenge in regards to weight loss, but the closing of the dining halls along with the Residence Hall, is.  For at least the last week of school, the dining halls tend to run on "chef's choice."  Basically, they cook whatever they have left to get rid of it before everyone leaves.  The other challenge it presents is that now that they're all closed, I am now on my own for most meals.  I have relied so much on just making healthier choices with the food that's prepared for me, that now I have to learn to completely fend for myself.  But, at least it will give me a head start preparing for not have any ready-made meals over the summer when I go home to visit.

2.  End of the year meals - One of the best (and also worst) things about the end of the year are the interview, transition, and thank you meals.  They're usually dinner, but occasionally lunch, and always at a restaurant.  It's been interesting going through them and trying to make healthier choices at the various places around campus.  Today, specifically, we had lunch at Red Lobster.  Normally, not a major problem since seafood, in general, is reasonably healthy.  The concern was, though, that today was also weigh-in.  I traditionally eat a lighter lunch on Mondays so that I don't have that food sitting in my stomach weighing me down.  I wanted to be able to enjoy myself, but also stick to my plan.  So, I ordered what I wanted, then told myself that I wasn't going to eat it all.  I ate my salad first and didn't eat any of the cheesy biscuits (that was tough).  There's a shrimp special going on right now, so I went with the garlic scampi, breaded shrimp, shrimp alfredo, and broccoli.  I didn't really want the pasta weighing me down, so I knew that's what was getting cut.  I ate the broccoli and garlic scampi - I debated on the breaded, but was still hungry so I went ahead and ate it since I wasn't having the pasta.  The good news was, that I set it aside and took it home for dinner - one less meal to cook!!

3.  Working Out - The end of the year is always a busy time, making sure to get everything done before the students leave.  Between that and all the final meetings, dinners, and such, that doesn't leave much time to fit in a workout.  The last few weeks have not granted me much time to get in activity...and my weight gain last week obviously showed it.  This week, I made it a priority...even with working over the weekend.  Not only did I get in a workout most days, but I also added in some yoga after my dancing.  A great way to relax after a long day and an hour of dancing.  The best day, though, had to be today.  Based on my workouts from the other days, and taking off two days, if I wanted to make my weekly goal of 21,000 sweat points, I was going to have to earn at least 5,000 both today and tomorrow.  To give you an idea what that means, most days I work out for about an hour - 15 songs straight, no stopping, and that gets you about 4,000 sweat points.  So, I knew that I needed to do more than my usual 15.  I hit 20 and was still feeling really good so I thought I'd just keep going.  I finished after 30 songs and ended up earning 7,600 sweat points.  HECK YES!

So far, I have been pretty successful at handling these three challenges this week.  I feel like I've made some good choices, and that was definitely reflected on the scale this week.  What was my reward for making winning choices?  A four pound loss...

Initial weight: 257.2
Week 17: -4.2
Total weight loss: -32.4 lbs
Current weight: 224.8

So my Triple Crown win, came with its own triple...I broke 30 pounds!!  Three bags of potatoes or a small child.

London Bridge is Falling Down...

...or maybe it's just my pants.

No really, my pants are falling down.  I can't walk from my the bathroom to my office without having to pull them back up again.  I know this is a good problem to have...no, really, this is a GREAT problem to have.  However, it's also a pain in the butt.  "Why don't you just go buy some new ones?" I hear you ask.  Well, for two reasons.  1. Frankly, I'm trying to save money for the vacay.  But, more importantly, 2. it's the end of April and *hopefully* it won't be pant-wearing season much longer.  Then, by the time it is pant-wearing season again, *hopefully* those pants that I would buy right now, won't fit either...and then that would just be a waste.

One of my housing ladies was complimenting me the other day and suggested that I save money buy going to yard sales or thrift stores.  I am certainly not against it, but I've found that it's difficult to get nice bigger-sized clothing at those places.  So, I'm sticking with my over-sized pants.  They're also kind of a great reminder about how far I've come!  When I started this journey in January, sometimes when I put my jeans on just after they get out of the washer/dryer, I had to do the whole "lay on the bed and not breathe just to get them on" thing.  And now, I don't even use the button or zipper anymore.  I just pull them up and down like sweatpants.  Today, more than once when I went to the restroom I pulled them up then went to button them only to realize that they were already buttoned.  Kind of an awesome feeling.

So, instead of ditching my old jeans, I'm clinging to them a little bit longer...and wearing a belt.  I wore a belt today.  I couldn't tell you the last time I wore one...I actually had to dig around in the bottom of my closet to even find it.  I eventually found them all stashed away in an old purse.  I'm not really a fan of the belt, if you couldn't tell.  They sometimes dig into your skin above your waistline (at least on big people they do), I could rarely find them in my size, and seeing one that fits is just another painful reminder about how big around you are.  And last, but certainly not least, it turns into a torture device when you're wearing one when you really have to pee.

The two belts that I own (not counting those cheap little things pretending to be belts that sometimes come on clothing for decoration) I believe I bought at Hot Topic because they're unisex.  Now, I love me some Hot Topic, but their belts are not generally what one would call "professional".  So I picked the more professional looking of the two and wore a long shirt that covered it.  Surprisingly, I had to buckle it on the third hole to actually keep my pants up.  And even more surprising, it wasn't really a torture device today!  I have yet to feel it digging into my skin, it didn't prevent me from making it to the toilet on time (especially since I'm no long wasting time on the button), and I haven't even really noticed much that it's there!  Who knew?!  I won't be going out anytime soon to buy new ones, this isn't an overnight convert kind of story, but perhaps they won't make hanging on to these pants so bad, after all.

Initial weight: 257.2
Week 16: +1.2
Total weight loss: -28.2 lbs
Current weight: 229.0

16 weeks - four months - and it has just flown by.  At Weight Watchers, you get another charm for sticking with the program for 16 weeks (I told you they like to celebrate...).  So, thanks to all of you for keeping me motivated and accountable for the last four months.  If I keep up this pace, I will soon hit my heaviest college weight...still too much, but a vast improvement.
